Not a fan of closed captions cluttering your screen? Disabling them on your Roku device is quick and easy. Here’s everything you need to know about how to turn off closed captions on Roku or third-party apps like Netflix and Prime Video.
How to Turn Off Closed Captions in Roku Settings
To turn off closed captions on Roku, press the “Home” button on your Roku remote and go to “Settings > Accessibility > Captions Mode.” Then choose “Off” to turn off closed captions. From the “Accessibility” page, you can also customize your captions font, size, language, and more.
Note: Changing your Roku settings for closed captions might not apply to all streaming apps. Skip to the next section below to find out how to turn off captions in apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
- Press the “Home” button on your Roku remote. Press this button until you see the Roku home screen on your TV.
- Go to “Settings.” To do this, press the left-directional button on your remote and then the up-directional button. When “Settings” is highlighted, press the OK button to select it.
- Select “Accessibility.”
- Go to “Captions Mode.”
- Finally, choose “Off.”
To customize your closed captions instead, go back to the “Accessibility” page. On this page, you can also change the “Captions style” (including the font, size, color, opacity, and more) and the “Captions preferred language.”

To turn off closed caption on Netflix, start watching a video and press the “Play/Pause” button on your Roku remote. Then, navigate to the “Other” button at the bottom of your screen and press the “OK” button on your remote. Finally, select “Off” under “Subtitles.”
- Start playing a video on Netflix.
- Then, press the Play/Pause button on your Roku remote. You can also press the down-directional button on your Roku remote to access the menu without pausing.
- Select the “Other” button at the bottom of your screen. To do this, press the down-directional button once and the right-directional button twice.
- Press “OK” on your remote.
- Finally, select “Off” under “Subtitles.”
You can also select the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the menu overlay to change other closed captions settings.
How to Turn Off Closed Captions on Prime Video
To turn off closed captions on Prime Video start watching a video and press the “Play/Pause” button on your Roku remote. Then, navigate to the “Subtitles CC” icon at the bottom of the screen and press the “OK” button on your remote. Finally, select “Off” from the pop-up menu.
- Start playing any video on Prime Video.
- Press the “Play/Pause” button on your Roku remote.
- Then, navigate to the “Subtitles CC” logo. You will see this icon at the bottom of your screen next to the “Skip” button. It looks like a box with horizontal lines at the bottom.
- Press the “OK” button on your remote. This will open a pop-up menu.
- Finally, select “Off.”
