How to Restart an Echo Dot

If your Echo device is slow or unresponsive, restarting it might get things working again. By refreshing the internal processor, you’ll clear temporary data that causes glitches, WiFi issues, and more. Here’s everything you need to know about how to restart your Echo Dot using voice commands, the power cable, or the Alexa app.

Note: Restarting your Echo Dot will NOT erase any of your personal data or settings. You will not need to set up your device after restarting.

How to Restart an Echo Dot with Voice Commands

The easiest way to restart your Echo Dot is by saying, “Alexa, restart.” When you say this voice command near your Echo device, Alexa will say, “Starting over.” Then your Echo Dot will light up blue. Once the blue light turns off, your device will be ready to use again.

How to Restart an Echo Dot with the Power Cable

To quickly restart your Echo Dot, simply unplug the power cable from the back of the device and wait 10 seconds. When you plug your Echo Dot back in, it will light up blue. Once the blue light turns off, your device will be ready to use again.

How to Restart an Echo Dot with the Alexa App

To restart an Echo Dot, open the Alexa app and tap the “Devices” tab at the bottom of your screen with a light bulb icon. Next, select your Echo Dot under Devices and tap the gear icon in the pop-up. Finally, select Restart device.

  1. Open the Alexa app. If you don’t already have the app, you can download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Go to Devices. This is the light bulb icon at the bottom of your screen.
  3. Select your Echo Dot. You will see all your Alexa devices under the “Devices” section.

    Note: If you can’t find your Echo Dot, tap Device Type > Echo & Alexa > Apply. This will filter out all the other types of devices you have.

  4. Tap the gear icon. You will see this in the top-right corner of the pop-up window.
  5. Finally, tap Restart device. Your device will go offline, and the ring light will turn blue. Once this light turns off, your device will be ready to use again.
