Alexa is great at setting timers, checking the weather, and controlling all your smart home devices—but the music she plays isn’t always what you want to hear. Here’s how to create a playlist for your Echo smart speakers using voice commands or the Alexa app.
How to Make a Playlist Using Alexa Voice Commands
To create a playlist using voice commands, say, “Alexa, create a playlist.” Then, Alexa will ask, “What’s the new playlist name?” Once you name your playlist, you can add songs while they are playing by saying, “Alexa, add this song to my [Playlist Name].”

By default, Alexa will play music from Amazon Music. This streaming service offers 100 million songs for Amazon Prime members—but only on one device at a time. However, you can change your default streaming service and create playlists on Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and more.

How to Make a Playlist on Amazon Music
To make a playlist on Amazon Music, open the Amazon Music app and go to Library > Playlists > New Playlist. Then, enter a name for your playlist and tap Add Songs. Finally, use the search bar to find songs and tap the plus sign to add them to your playlist.
- Open the Amazon Music app. If you don’t already have it, you can download the app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
- Tap “Library.” You will see this heart icon at the bottom of your screen in the app. If you are creating a playlist on the Amazon Music website, you will see the Library tab at the top of your screen.
- Select “Playlists.” You will see this option at the top of the app. If you’re on the Amazon Music website, you can skip this step.

- Select “New Playlist.” This option appears at the top of your screen in the app or on the website.
- Choose the type of playlist you want to create. In the Amazon Music app, you can choose to create a playlist manually or let AI build one based on your listening history.

- Enter a name for your playlist. This is the same name you will use to ask Alexa to play your playlist, so make sure to choose something easy and memorable.
- Tap “Add Songs.”

- Search for songs. Use the search bar at the top of your screen to search for songs, bands, albums, or genres of music.
- Tap the plus sign to add songs to your playlist. Once you have added the songs you want, you can start the playlist by saying, “Alexa, play [Playlist Name].”

Once you have created a playlist, you can always add new songs to it by saying, “Alexa, add this song to [Playlist Name].” Or, you can add songs in the app by going to “Library > Playlists,” selecting your playlist, and tapping the three-dot icon.
