How to Change What Alexa Calls You

Alexa’s great at recognizing her own name—but she doesn’t always remember yours. Here’s everything you need to know about how to change what Alexa calls you using simple voice commands or the Alexa app.

How to Change Your Name with Alexa Voice Commands

To change the name that Alexa calls you, all you have to do is stand near an Echo speaker and say “Alexa, learn my voice.” This allows you to set up Voice ID, so Alexa can call you by name, tell you apart from other users, and personalize your experience.

Alexa will ask for your name, and you will need to repeat four phrases, so she can recognize your voice. If you don’t already have an account set up, Alexa can create a new one for you during the process.

How to Change Your Name in the Alexa App

To change the name Alexa calls you, open the Alexa app and tap the three-line icon at the bottom of the screen. Then go to “Settings > Your Profile & Family > Name and Pronunciation.” Finally, select your first or last name and enter a new one.  

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap the three-line icon at the bottom of your screen. This might also be labeled as “More.”
  3. Select “Settings.”

  5. Tap “Name and Pronunciation.”

  6. Select “Your first name” and/or “Your last name.”
  7. Finally, change the name you want Alexa to call you. Once you have entered a new name, tap the Play icon on the right to hear how Alexa will pronounce it.

If you are satisfied with the pronunciation, tap “Nailed It.” Otherwise, tap “Let’s Fix That.” Then choose from the suggested pronunciations or enter your own. When you’re happy with the pronunciation, tap “That’s Better.”

If Alexa still calls you by the wrong name, try saying, “Alexa, learn my voice.” Then choose your name and repeat the prompts to make sure Alexa recognizes your voice and connects you to the right profile.

If your Alexa device is calling you the wrong name, you might need to delete a user from your Amazon Family.

To delete a user from your Amazon Family, go to amazon.com/manage-your-profiles/home, and sign in to the same account your Echo speaker uses. Then select the user you want to delete, scroll down, and select “Remove [name] from your Amazon Family.”

If none of these steps worked, you can always reset your Alexa device to factory settings. Then you can set it up from scratch with a new name.
